Transfer News January 2021/22 Transfer Window

KR is in narnia if he thinks players choose the shirt over their contract terms.
I sometimes think he's hopelessly niave in a cynical football world.

For eg. Mark Sykes, if he signs a less lucrative contract will have to potentially forge a career away from footy. We all know a bad injury, or falling out of favour can change everything in a heart beat.

If you rate the player enough to be at the club... Show him the money. Simple.
Can’t understand where you’re coming from with this at all. If the game yesterday shows us anything it’s that KR has done a great job of getting committed players that completely buy in to the success of the club - they may have their own private agenda but good on them for being ambitious as long as they give us 100% while they’re here. We’re a club that helps players on in their career - but they have to apply themselves. The minute he senses Sykes is out for himself, he won’t play. But yesterday we completed the double against a team that’s done what you’re suggesting.

Go ask Ipswich fans on their forum how your suggested strategy is working out for them. Their squad cost more to assemble than most of the championship and their owner was stupid enough to publicly promise they’d romp the league. Yet half way through they’ve had to pay off a good manager early at great expense and still only clinging on to the top half - and their pride. Charlton remain below Accrington!!

It’s simply not enough to throw money around aimlessly in football. you need strategy and a philosophy and at times that will mean having the strength to walk away when your gut tells you something isn’t good for the club.

Doesn’t it give you peace of mind to know everyone we sign really wants to be here?

Wasnt it his agent who advised & engineered him to switch from NI to Ireland in international allegiance....which was oh such good advice for the player (not) .....Sykes' agent is an absolute idiot
Yes, it was. He's burnt his bridges with NI, who were furious with him. And the ROI 'interest' turned out to be nothing concrete. I'd be surprised if he ever made an ROI squad. In fact, I would bet a few bob that McNally will play for ROI, but Sykes never will.

Club enquired about a Championship striker over a week ago, but unsure whether that’s still ongoing or whether the move has been rejected by the parent club / player. Assuming (perhaps wrongly, let’s see) that the Defoe stuff over the last few days suggests it’s a no on that one. Especially as Winnall is doing his usual “I’m fit this time, I swear!” routine a week before the deadline.

The trouble with wanting to sign players when you’re at the right end of the table is that you need to try to bag ones who you won’t suddenly find aren’t good enough in a few months if you get promoted. Sometimes being further down and looking to build for the next 18 months at the same level means you’re able and more comfortable to get a deal done. You know that the player is of the right calibre for where you are and will be, the player feels comfortable with their prospects for the same reasons etc. If you’re in with a proper shout of going up then are you comfortable paying money / offering a decent contract for a good player at this level but a bench warmer at the next one? If you want to go for one who you believe can definitely hack it at the next level, are they willing to come and risk you missing out when they could definitely get a Championship club (and Championship wages) by the summer? Can you afford them if you match those financials but then get stuck at this level for the next couple of seasons?

It’s deceptively tricky.

think you could well be right re ROI ..... shame Sykes has got an absolute numpty as his agent ..... that said, there's a lot of idiots masquerading as football agents

Sykes has always had potential but lacked consistency and end product. The last few months he has begun to show both. It's a shame it's come about in the last year of his contract so will be in demand. I don't know whether we need to look at our contract lengths? We often seem to sign young potentially good players on 3x year contracts. They take a year to bed in, start to develop in their second year and then attract interest and then in the last year really come good when they are in danger of going for nothing at the end of the season. I guess it's about balance though because on the other hand, there are the Jamie Hanson's who are on lengthy contracts who nobody will be interested in and who hardly plays.

If you’re a talksport listener and have ever heard Simon Jordan talk about agents, it’s excellent therapy!!

It’s incredible what they get away with and how few of them operate with genuine good intentions and act like business people/career builders rather than groomers and opportunists.

One of his best arguments is that there should be some very heavy regulation on them that legally requires them to contribute financially to grass roots football on every single transaction - say 5-10% FA tax and a further premium payment made directly to the selling club if they are further down the pyramid selling u21 players to top clubs. They take millions out of the game and some communities don’t even have a safe space for kids to kick a ball around.

Possibly, judging by KR’s comments. Could just be a case of bigmouth strikes again, of course.

My main hope is that Liverpool don't come attempting to poach him.

I couldn't bear another deal around Ray Houghton.

...Oi'll get me coat.

Let’s be honest unless your from oxford and have supported the club since a kid. It’s no ones dream to play for oxford. That being said I think his point is a Brannigan type of player/person. Passion and respect for the shirt and if you want to progress do it with top performances etc and. Not throw fits when when offered a little bit more money else where. We look after players I think he just wants a little bit of loyalty back from players

Stockton surely won’t come here if Championship sides are looking at him. He can get double what we would offer at least

Like I said earlier in the thread. We wanted Browne on a perm. Was very close to happening. Charlton must have come in late. Although that’s still not completed I believe…

We have not been after Findley. We’re looking at a young centre back. Expecting Thorniley to be recalled this week, if so, happy with McNally playing more often.

Defoe is no where near done. But we are 1 of 2 clubs with a real chance. Not sure of the other.

Again something I posted a good few weeks back, still being told Moore is here next season. Sykes has turned two contracts down.

Stockton is a new one. Not heard that one
Wish Sykes was staying and Moore going…

This is such a good point. Objectively, Oxford is a tough sell. Sky high prices for everything Not justified by quality of life. The city centre for example has nothing much going for it in terms of bars, restaurants, music venues etc.

Having just taken the plunge myself and moved North, the quality of life for the same money is much better and goes much further. The housing costs in Oxfordshire are scandalous and if I'm a footballer looking at the next 2-3 years it would be a major consideration.

It's a real quandary.

You mean "Messing up their grammar". Do not end a sentence with a preposition.
No, I meant messing up and I'm sure everybody else understood my sentence too, whether grammatically correct or not. That's the issue I have with grammar pedants, they don't seem to understand that the basic role of language is communication between people and as long as both parties understand what is being communicated, what is is the issue with some minor grammatical errors?

No it’s not, it’s grim up North, location location location, you get what you pay for
