Transfer News January 2021/22 Transfer Window

Blackpool contact suggests we had mentioned about money, Ethan Robson and/or Thorniley as a last acceptable offer for Brannagan.
Looks like game over on that one (for now)
I did wonder about Robson when he was recalled from MK a player we’ve be after in the past and gives us a possible replacement for CAM should he go.

He is 28 in March , would really have to go some to get a

This season being the operative word . He is 28 in March and only done it for one season in league one . We do need to keep improving the squad but other areas cannot be overlooked or the ' model ' completely got rid of on a gamble.
I don't think we're just putting all eggs in one basket, we will be strengthening else where but as in the striker we have Gatlin O'Donkor coming through to develop. We need a striker ready to challenge Taylor now and next season and that is Stockton.

Robbo: "“We have options in that position and because we always knew there was the recall clause we have made plans for all eventualities and we will wait and see if we need to bring in a direct replacement in the next week or so.”
This is Karl at his absolute worst. We were very short before Thorniley was recalled. Now we are wafer thin..

What are we playing at this window?

Could be Matt Stevens or any number of up and coming players though . But I've spoken enough on this. Great to see the backing from the board either way

.... and young Smith too .... who so far seems a natural striker/ goal scorer (IMO)

From what I’ve heard it seems like we are trying to sign top quality and with that comes more complex negotiations & maybe why things are taking longer than normal to get anyone in, with wages and transfer fees we could end up spending over £1m this window if Robbo gets who he wants. So shouldn’t question the boards intent or the club.

I suppose the thinking is Taylor and Stockton would be the duo to give us a real shot of getting out of L1 during the length of their contracts, if Stockton kept up his current form that is very hard to argue with.

@Shosho did you not have some stats on Stockton regarding XG?

It's exactly what clubs in our league (including those with bigger budgets) and the one below have to do.
Only Wycombe from the top 8 have no loanees

Wigan - 2
Rotherham - 2
Sunderland - 4
Wycombe - 0
MK Dons - 4
Oxford - 3 (since Thorniley went)
Plymouth - 3
Sheff Weds - 6
Clubs survived, got promoted, relegated without a January transfer window.
All this messing around every year.
Do your business in the summer get on with it &deal with it like the good old days.its like a circus out there now &the agent's are the clowns

We'll replace Thorniley and won't drop quality.
In true KR form I doubt he'll sign a like for like replacement. I expect McNally will play (don't mind that) with Long staying at RB but will play CB if needed with Forde playing RB when Long plays CB.

The wages will be used on a winger I'd imagine or a another import from Ireland who'll need a season or two to develop.

92 goals in 344 games… apart from the last two seasons hasn’t had many good goalscoring seasons… is 28 years old… £650k isn’t cheap!
So what has suddenly turned Stockton into a prolific goalscorer? Might it be who he's been playing with and providing the service? If so, shouldn't we be looking at that? Maybe we also need to get the package that makes him tick?

Maybe he is a late developer like Jamie Vardy.

1m got you the chance to talk to CB.. That time has now elapsed so it’s down to OUFC now. That’s also why it’s gone and will go all quiet on the CB to Blackpool..

I know but when somebody mentioned £2m, you suggested half it which would be less than the clause (the value as has been suggested on here anyway).

I admire the ambition of the board and there’s no doubt that starting to table bids of £650k at this level is starting to act like a ‘big club’. Cole Stockton would certainly add something different to our squad. However, I have two causes for concern with this.

The first is the player himself. Lower league strikers can often go through season after season with fine but not eye-catching seasons and then suddenly catch fire and end up with stats Mo Salah would be proud of. Our own Jack Midson scored four goals in our Conference promotion – a very modest return for a striker. He then bagged 18 in 2011-12 for AFC Wimbledon and ended up joint top goalscorer for League 2. Whilst we won promotion in 2015-16 with Roofe leading the way with 18 league goals, Leyton Orient’s Jay Simpson scored 25 as second top league goalscorer. Roofe has since played in Europe and now plays at Rangers. Simpson since then hasn’t scraped double figures in goals since that season and last played in Cyprus. Are we paying for genuine talent or a temporary hotstreak in Stockton? I hope the due diligence has been done.

The second is the deviation of ‘the model’. In bringing in additional resources, I’m slightly worried that the board have lost sight of the club we want to be. Some of our best buys and prospects have come in January such as Atkinson, Brannagan and McNally and I want to make sure that happens. The summer saw McGuane join but no one else I’d really add to the conveyor belt (Ben Davis looks to be here simply because he has a Thai flag next to his name). Let’s not completely forget the model that has got us here. Spending well on Stockton may be worth something if he gets us promoted but if not will there be anyone to pay more than £650k to take him off our hands? At 27, unless he really takes off at a goal-a-game ratio then I see his sort of signing a gamble at getting us up to the Championship in one go rather than the steady accumulation of talent that MApp and MAsh seemed to deploy. It's a bigger gamble doing it this way.

Maybe I’m cautious by nature and like seeing us develop and sell on players. It sells us as a great and reliable stepping stone for ambitious players looking for an avenue to the big leagues. I don’t think we should lose that and I feel that we may have the conveyor belt running dry if we don’t consider more McNally, Whyte, Lundtsram-esque signings.

But our model is a mix of strategies..

We sign some who are clearly potential signings (Atkinson etc), some are about the ‘here and now’.

Stockton falls more into the ‘hear and now’ category, he can come in and make an immediate difference. He’s match fit and in form.

I really hope we get him.

In his interview it seems kr isnt 100% certain we need to bring in a cb now Thornily has gone back. But with only 2 recognised cb that play, surely it becomes a priority, or at least someone who can play across the back?

Has an interview been released in the last couple of hours ?

The good old days? When has it ever been a case of get your business done in the summer and get on with it? Never. Before the two transfer windows you could lose your best players at any time in the season (Ray Houghton - Sold October, Dean Saunders - Sold October, John Aldridge - Sold January, Paul Simpson - Sold February, Trevor Hebberd - Sold April), it was a lot more volatile back then.

He's said himself it been playing under Derek Adams and Stephen Robinson, two manahers who have instilled confidence into him and encouraged an attacking freedom that he's never been granted before. From that it sounds like KR could do great things with him.

That's why I said, deal with it, same for every team
No matter who you were

The two players I've heard mentioned are established league centre backs. In addition, we've looked at players like Jack Tucker (22 year old, 120 games in league one) or Will Boyle (26 year old, 150 games in league's 1 & 2). This won't be some bodge job!

Clearly, Blackpool are being petty over Thornily. They obviously don't want him because they offered him to us as make weight for CB
