Home Match Day Thread 05/03/2022 L1: OUFC v Burton Albion

Stevens had no chance with their goal. Gavin Whyte switched off before their goalscorer got the ball and was therefore too late to be able to close him down. It was a good strike, curling away from Stevens so as said no chance for him.

Not witch hunting Stevens again but you can’t say he had no chance. Of course he had a chance, if he’s positioned probably four to six more inches to his left he probably saves it. Is this another ‘no keeper in the world saves that‘ load of old cobblers. Plenty of keepers save it and plenty of others don’t - Stevens was in the didn’t category. Make of that what you want.

Watched highlights and still can’t believe Winnall missed that sitter, he should be totally embarrassed, thankfully we weren’t drawing at the time and needed a winner

What was all the fuss about the disallowed goal at 1-0?
I didn't really register what did or didn't happen and haven't seen any footage subsequently, but just witnessed a torrent of abuse and incoherent ranting at the linesman which appeared to indicate that his understanding of the rules is on a par with Danny Cowley!

I actually feel sorry for him because noone can actually be that bad, particularly someone who has had such a lengthy and successful career.

So it must just be one of those runs every player has when the world conspires against you so nothing goes right, elongated by the sporadic nature of his appearances and the nagging pressure of needing one more goal for his century.

That doesn't help us of course, but the guy does just need to catch a break

What I make of it is it's an idiotic statement. Right behind the shot and it bent into the corner with speed. No goalie would stop that.

I think the pressure of 99 is doing him in. His reaction to the earlier one where the defender took it out before he could score said it all.

Rumours of "traffic management" issues exiting the stadium & bowlplex car park after the game?
Hopefully a moot point in terms of moving to the new stadium, but I still cannot believe that a better solution has not been evolved for parking at the current place.

More than one exit from the overflow would be a start, preferably one to that doesn't have to filter past the cinema and main car park and also a dedicated section for cinema goers and/or a more coordinated approach to film start/finish times so cinema goers (including parents with small children) don't have to queue amongst thousands of rowdy football types to get home.

I know it is difficult to comprehend but apparently there are some people in the world for whom football isn't the only option for a Saturday afternoon!!

The reason he gets beat is because he takes a step to his right just before/as Guedioura hits it. If he hadn't taken that step to his right he would've been four to six inches to his left - he also would've been stood near enough on his left hand post, which would've been a poor starting position and saving it from there would've been very lucky rather than good 'keeping.

I don't think Stevens can be criticised for that. It was a great hit that came as a result of us getting done by a long ball and then failing to clear our lines twice.

What a load of absolute rubbish. No keeper ? Not 6’ 5” De Gea or Allison or the City keeper (forgot his name). Plenty stop it, probably some in L1. I’m not being critical of Stevens other than yet another long ranger fizzes past him. It’s not an error from him but don’t give it the cheap line ‘no goalie saves it’. You want to have a look at some of the saves from bygone keepers if you reckon no keeper is getting his fingertips to that. There’s a difference between an error and saying he could have saved it - it wasn’t an error but he could have saved it. What don’t you get ?

I get your point, if the keeper was positioned at the point where the ball entered the goal, then it would be saved.
But there’re correct positions for keepers, so they can maximise the percentage chance of all shots being saved from the point of danger.
If the keepers in the right position, and the shot’s still unreachable, then it’s not the keepers fault.

Just having seen the highlights as quest only showed the first half and not having the clearest of views from the East stand, I think Jack couldn’t do any more he seemed to be positioned well the goal was hit with venom and it appeared to take a deflection on its way through. So I feel some of the comments on their goal and jacks positioning for their goal are a bit unjustified.
